Renowned and controversial Sri Lankan writer Tennyson Perera has passed away at the age of 86.
Perera was widely regarded as a highly influential figure in Sri Lankan literature, having authored more than 100 works, including short stories, novels, and translations.
In 1967, his short story collection “Dathi Roden Upan Budun” (The Buddha Born of a Cogwheel) was banned by the government, making it the first banned book in Sri Lanka.
Following allegations that the work had insulted Buddhism, he was arrested by police and interrogated at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters.
Tennyson Perera is remembered as one of the leading literary figures who introduced new literary trends to Sri Lanka and made a significant contribution to the development of modern Sinhala literature.
