The United National Party (UNP) has formally declined an invitation by the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) to join their May Day activities.
A letter by UNP General Secretary - Thalatha Athukorala states that although the party remains committed towards the public expectation of the UNP and SJB working together, this year’s May Day falls on a full moon poya day.
The letter further clarifies that the late Ranasinghe Premadasa, had pointed out as the Prime Minister back then that it is inappropriate to engage in political activities if a May Day falls on a poya day.
Therefore, the UNP has previously decided not not to engage in political activities on such days, dedicating them to religious observances instead, the letter further notes.
Accordingly, it is not possible for the UNP to join any May Day rally organised by the SJB or any other political party, the letter points out.
Despite this, the letter emphasises that the UNP remains prepared to work together with the SJB on future political matters and wishes them well.
