A jailor and a warden have been arrested following the death of an inmate at the Magazine Prison yesterday (April 27), police said.
The Department of Prisons has reportedly launched a special investigation into the incident.
Prisons Media Spokesman A.C. Gajanayake stated that the inquiry is being conducted under the supervision of an Assistant Superintendent of Prisons.
According to reports, 02 inmates had attempted to escape from their cells, and a prison officer intervened to prevent the attempt.
Two inmates and a prison officer were admitted to hospital with injuries following an incident reported at Magazine Prison yesterday. However, one of the injured inmates had subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased is a 38-year-old who had been in custody in connection with drug-related charges, the Prisons Department confirmed.
Meanwhile, a complaint has also been lodged with the Borella Police regarding the incident.
Accordingly, Borella Police have initiated a separate investigation into the matter, the Police Media Spokesman stated.
