World Earth Day falls today (April 22).
This year’s theme is “Our Power – Our Planet”, highlighting the role of collective human action in protecting the Earth.
In 2026, key environmental challenges include climate change, loss of biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as rising industrial waste accumulation and environmental degradation.
The first Earth Day was observed on April 22, 1970, in the United States.
It was initiated by former U.S. Senator and environmentalist Gaylord Nelson, and has since grown into a global movement.
Today, Earth Day is observed in 193 countries, with participation from over 01 billion people worldwide.
The day was officially recognized through a United Nations General Assembly resolution in 2009, aiming to affirm the Earth and its ecosystems as humanity’s common home.
The movement originally gained momentum in response to growing environmental concerns, particularly air and water pollution caused by excessive resource consumption by European nations, which posed serious risks to human health.
