It is reported that the constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) does not allow the appointment of a complete outsider even if current SLC Chairman Shammi Silva steps down.
According to the SLC constitution, in the occurrence of such an event, the next step will be to convene an executive committee meeting and appoint one of the two current vice-chairmen to the top post.
Currently, Jayantha Dharmadasa and Ravin Wickramaratne are functioning as the vice-chairmen of SLC.
Meanwhile, it is reported that several cricketers as well as a former interim committee chairman had met President Anura Kumara Dissanayake recently and proposed to appoint an interim committee to the SLC and to appoint former minister and SJB member - Eran Wickramaratne as its Chairman.
It is also reported that the general opinion of SLC officials is that the cricket administration started to face severe media backlash due to physical fitness issues of players that came to light after the failure at the recent T20 World Cup as well as due to an attempt to bring in a group of new players into the national team.
Managers controlling prominent players are also said to be behind these attacks.
In addition, it is said that managers as well as some recent low performing players, who had suddenly purchased houses and cars, are behind these hostile reactions.
Speaking at a media briefing today (April 22), SJB MP S.M. Marikkar also said that he had come across reports alleging that Eran Wickramaratne is to be appointed as Chairman of a SLC interim committee.
Noting that Shammi remains SLC Chairman and Eran has not been given such a post, Marikkar said that such reports could have been merely 'planted' by certain media.
However, rumour is that Shammi is to resign on April 29, which is coincidentally the date of the next hearing of the case filed against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe under the Public Property Act.
