‘Choka Malli’ granted bail (Update)

Former Ratnapura District MP - Premalal Jayasekara, also known as ‘Choka Malli’, who was arrested yesterday (April 21), has been granted bail.

He was produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court today (April 22) where Magistrate Pushpika Jayadasa ordered his release on bail under strict conditions.

The Magistrate ordered to release him on a Rs. 25,000 cash bail and two surety bails amounting to Rs. 01 million.

The Magistrate further ordered that the case be taken up again on September 14 and directed to retain the firearm in question, in court custody.

Additionally, the Magistrate ordered the suspect’s passport to be surrendered to court.

Former MP Jayasekara was arrested yesterday by the Nuwara Eliya Police over allegations that he had threatened a person by brandishing a firearm.

‘Choka Malli’ to be produced before court

Former Ratnapura District MP - Premalal Jayasekara, also known as ‘Choka Malli’, who was arrested yesterday (April 21), is scheduled to be produced before the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court today (April 22).

Jayasekara was arrested by Nuwara Eliya Police over allegations that he had threatened a person with a firearm.

According to police, the incident had occurred following a heated argument between the former MP, who had arrived in Nuwara Eliya with family members, and a group of individuals who had travelled from Avissawella on an excursion.

It is reported that the situation escalated, during which the suspect allegedly displayed a pistol in his possession and threatened the group.

Based on a complaint received, officers of the Nuwara Eliya Police arrested him on suspicion.

Police further revealed that the firearm in his possession had been issued under a licence granted by the Ministry of Defence, which had expired in 2025.
