Probe on Easter Sunday bombings to be concluded shortly - minister

Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala has said that the on-going investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks are expected to be successfully concluded within a short period of time.

Speaking at a media briefing held yesterday (April 21), he said that investigations have proceeded forward successfully with some level of progress and findings have already been reported to the judiciary.

He further said that the Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will continue to actively and efficiently work in order to ensure that the on-going Easter attacks investigations are conducted properly and accurately.

Meanwhile, addressing the main service held at St. Anthony’s Shrine in Kochchikade, Colombo, yesterday (21) to commemorate the bomb attacks, Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that even though the current Government has adopted a positive approach to the investigation into the Easter attacks, certain Government officials are attempting to sabotage it. He said that the question arises as to whether political forces representing them were behind the Easter attacks and questioned if not as to why the journey to find the truth about the Easter attacks is so obstructed.

The tragic attacks occurred on April 21, 2019 as worshippers were celebrating Easter Sunday. The coordinated bombings at 3 Christian churches and major tourist hotels killed nearly 275 persons and injured scores of others.
