A pilot low-floor bus service to provide safe and accessible transport for persons with disabilities and special needs was launched today (April 21) at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Center.
It was launched under the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme under the auspices of Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake.
A fleet of 10 such low-floor buses entered into operations today to provide safer, more accessible and comfortable transport for people with disabilities, including wheelchair users, the visually impaired and pregnant women.
The pilot project is underway on the Makumbura - Colombo Fort route and the Makumbura -Kadawatha route, covering key hospitals such as the National Hospital Colombo and Apeksha Hospital.
Addressing the event, Minister Bimal Ratnayake said that it is planned to expand the fleet to 122 such buses by the end of the year in other key cities such as Kandy, Batticaloa, Matara and Jaffna.
Meanwhile, an app, LMT GO, was also launched to enable passengers to access service information easily.
