SL para athletes return home with 02 bronze medals

Sri Lankan para-athletes Nuwan Indika Gamage and Pradeep Somasiri returned home early today (Oct. 07) after winning 02 bronze medals at the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships.

The Championship, held from Sep. 27 – Oct. 05 in New Delhi, India, featured over 980 athletes from 100 countries.

Sri Lankan athlete Nuwan Indika, competing in the T44 category, won the bronze medal in the long jump with a leap of 6.46m, achieving his personal best.

Meanwhile, Pradeep Somasiri, representing Sri Lanka in the men’s 1500m T46 event, also won bronze while breaking the Asian record in his category.

Other Sri Lankan participants, Janani Dhananjana in women’s long jump T47 and 100m T47, and Buddhika Heshan Fernando in men’s long jump T47, recorded their personal best performances during the championship.

The athletes returned to Sri Lanka early today, arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake, at 2.20 a.m. on Air India flight AI-273 from New Delhi.

They were welcomed by a delegation from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and representatives of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC), including its chairman.
