56 politicians granted Rs.131 mn. from President’s Fund sans eligibility review

According to a report issued by the National Audit Office (NAO), a total of 56 Members of Parliament and Provincial Councils have been provided Rs.131,371,110 as medical assistance from the President’s Fund between 2005 – 2024, without proper evaluation of eligibility.

The audit report states that standard requirements when granting medical aid from the President’s Fund, such as income limits, divisional secretary reports, financial assets, or the prescribed maximum limit for medical assistance, have not been considered.

It further notes that although the President’s Fund Act does not permit loans, a letter issued by the then Presidential Secretary on Feb 02, 2015 had allowed a Member of Parliament to obtain Rs.10,908,798 as medical aid on a repayment basis.

However, as of June 2025, the amount had not been recovered.

The report also reveals that a former Prime Minister had also received Rs.29,809,143 from the Fund in 2014 and 2021 for medical treatment.

Of this, Rs.13,748,217 had been granted on a repayment basis, but that amount too remains unrecovered as of June 2025.
