Beedi prices to be upped from tomorrow

Beedi producers and importers have announced that beedi prices will increase from tomorrow (Oct. 10).

With the price hike, the retail price of a 2 1/4 inch beedi will rise to Rs.15, while a 2-inch beedi and a red threaded beedi will be priced at Rs.13.

Previously, the prices were Rs.10 and Rs.9.50, respectively.

The producers attributed the price hike to the government raising the Tobacco Tax by a rupee as well as due to rising production costs.

Although the production cost of a beedi is around Rs.13.75, they had been forced to sell at lower prices in the past, making the business unsustainable.

The producers emphasized that the price adjustment is necessary to pay taxes properly.

They also highlighted ongoing challenges in the industry, including the illegal import of Beedi Leaves or Tendu Leaves, which is the main raw material for production.

They warned that the government must take action if all beedi traders fail to comply with the new prices effective tomorrow.

Additionally, they have requested government intervention to resolve legal irregularities regarding beedi leaves.
